In honor of National Beer Day 2016, I’m listing off a few of my favorite, classic Chicago places to grab some brew! National Beer Day is actually the unofficial holiday celebrated every year marking the day in 1933, the first day in 13 years, that people could legally buy, sell and drink beer.

From deliciously crafted beer cocktails to the coziest place to belly up for a cold one, raise a glass to my top ten bars with the best kind of brew:

1. Rooftop: Gene’s Sausage Shop, Lincoln Square

Known for their German-rooted fine meats and artisanal selections, head to the roof and enjoy a tall boy, fresh herbs and a ‘wurst while overlooking the city below. Cash only, ATM inside.

2. Dive: Cody’s Public House, Lakeview

I was tipped off by a good friend that this was a great spot– and she was right! Friendliest bartenders, great Juke and all you can eat pretzel sticks. Head there in the summer and the back patio transforms into a cozy beer garden. Cash only, ATM inside.

3. Dive, Dive: L&L Tavern, Lakeview

There’s a dive, and then there’s a dive, dive. L&L is exactly that. I’m pretty sure it’s the last place you could find Hamm’s, grab a pizza and head there for some late night people watching. Cash only, ATM inside.

4. Hidden Treasure: Billy Goat Tavern, River North

I don’t know a better place to get a cheezborger, cheezorger, cheezeborger and a beer than the original Billy Goat Tavern. Join the local crowd on the off hours and see it come to life. Cash only, ATM inside.

5. Crafts on Draft: The Green Lady, Roscoe Village

This classic Irish pub is quite the craze on a Saturday night, but with 30 craft beers on draft, how could it not be? If you’re as indecisive as me, ask the bartender to make you a flight of his favorite selections.

6. Brewery: Revolution Brewing, Logan Square

Revolution is hands-down my favorite brewery tour in the city. They’re amazingly knowledgeable and passionate staff only slightly outweighs their selection of endless tastings that leave you in a tizzy for more.

7. Beer Cocktail: The Gage, The Loop

An extremely refreshing cocktail, The Perfect Storm includes Gosling’s Black Seal, Domaine de Canton, Ginger, and Harp beer. This new spring concoction is a righteous riff on a Dark and Stormy and the Harp adds a touch of bitterness, which contrasts nicely with the spicy ginger and keeps you sipping.

8. Local Bar: Hopleaf Bar, Andersonville

Honestly, I’m not sure what I love more: the food or the beer. Both, however, pair so well with the surroundings of Andersonville. Always packed, it’s worth the wait for a seat, sandwich and a sip.

9. Beer Garden: Sheffield’s Beer and Wine Garden, Lakeview

A Chicago staple and literally dubbed Chicago’s Best Beer Garden, you’ll find me here sharing some ‘Q with friends and staying longer for their beer selection.

10. Flight: Howells & Hood, River North

Representing beer from all over the world, at this point it’s no secret H&H has over 114 unique craft beers flowing from 360 taps. Which makes it a great place for a flight. Their Around The World is my favorite for obvious reasons.
